Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Crises often test the resilience of communities, institutions, and public trust in leadership. In Bama LGA, Borno State, crises ranging from insurgency to humanitarian emergencies have profoundly shaped public opinion. The way information is communicated during these crises plays a pivotal role in influencing perceptions, fostering trust, and promoting calm. Public Relations (PR) is a critical tool for managing crises, shaping narratives, and maintaining credibility among stakeholders.
PR strategies, such as crisis communication planning, media relations, and stakeholder engagement, enable organizations to manage the flow of information, counter misinformation, and align public opinion with recovery efforts. Recent studies suggest that effective PR during crises enhances public confidence and mitigates the impact of misinformation (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). This study investigates the influence of PR on public opinion during crises in Bama LGA, providing insights into best practices for managing complex emergencies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The recurrent crises in Bama LGA have led to significant challenges in managing public opinion. Insufficient communication, lack of transparency, and the spread of misinformation often exacerbate tensions and erode public trust. Despite the critical role of PR in crisis management, its influence on shaping public opinion in Bama LGA remains underexplored. This study examines how PR strategies can effectively shape public perceptions and foster community resilience during crises.
